Tilt Five – Augmented Reality System for Tabletop Gaming

Tilt Five is an augmented reality system designed to bring digital worlds, interactive 3D models and virtual game boards directly onto a tabletop surface.

Unlike conventional virtual reality headsets, Tilt Five does not fully isolate the user from the surrounding environment. Players can continue to see other participants, the room and physical objects around them while interacting with digital content displayed on the dedicated Tilt Five game board.

The system consists of lightweight Tilt Five glasses, a Tilt Five Wand controller and a specially designed retroreflective Tilt Five Gameboard. The glasses project a stereoscopic 3D image onto the board, creating the impression that digital objects are positioned above the table, inside the board or extend into a virtual world below its surface.

Solo and Shared Tabletop Experiences

Tilt Five can be used for both single-player and shared multiplayer experiences.

In supported applications, each participant uses their own pair of Tilt Five glasses and sees the digital environment from an individual perspective. This makes it possible to provide each player with private information, personalised interface elements or hidden game resources without using a traditional split-screen display.

Supported experiences may include:

digital board games;
strategy and tactical games;
action and adventure games;
puzzle games;
racing games;
tabletop role-playing games;
interactive maps and virtual environments;
educational visualisations;
presentations of 3D models;
custom applications created with the Tilt Five SDK.

The availability of single-player, local multiplayer and online multiplayer functionality depends on the selected game or application.

Tilt Five Glasses

The lightweight Tilt Five glasses are equipped with two LCOS projectors, head-position tracking, infrared cameras, stereo speakers and a built-in microphone.

The glasses display a separate image for each eye, allowing the user to perceive depth and view digital objects in three dimensions.

The glasses do not contain a built-in battery. They are powered through a USB connection to a compatible computer or supported device. An appropriate USB adapter may be included depending on the selected bundle.

Tilt Five Wand Controller

The Tilt Five Wand enables users to point at, select, move and interact with objects displayed in the augmented reality environment.

The controller supports six degrees of freedom, allowing the system to detect both its position and orientation.

The Wand includes:

analogue joystick;
trigger button;
programmable control buttons;
motion sensors;
vibration feedback;
LED status indicator.

The controller is powered by two AA batteries.

Tilt Five Gameboard

The Tilt Five Gameboard provides the dedicated surface on which the digital image is displayed.

Its retroreflective material returns the projected light towards the glasses. As a result, multiple users can look at the same board while each person sees the scene from their own position and viewing angle.

The XE Gameboard included with the main bundles is foldable and features angled side sections supported by dedicated stands. This creates a larger visual area and allows virtual environments to extend beyond a flat tabletop surface.
