The RealSense™ D415 is a compact stereoscopic depth camera designed for precise distance measurement, spatial reconstruction, and 3D vision systems. The camera utilizes stereoscopic depth-sensing technology and rolling shutter sensors, delivering high-quality depth data within a relatively narrow 65° × 40° field of view.
These characteristics make the D415 particularly well-suited for applications where the accurate measurement of small objects and fine details takes precedence over a very wide field of view. The manufacturer recommends it for use cases such as 3D scanning, facial authentication, and volumetric capture. The camera is suitable for operation in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Software
To fully utilize the camera's capabilities—particularly for handling depth data and developing custom vision applications—the RealSense SDK 2.0 (librealsense) is used; this is a cross-platform software development kit provided by the manufacturer as open-source software. The SDK supports current RealSense depth cameras and enables integration with various environments and programming languages.
Supported platforms include, among others:
Windows 10 / Windows 11
Linux / Ubuntu
NVIDIA Jetson
macOS
The manufacturer also provides instructions for selected other platforms, including Raspberry Pi and Android.
The RealSense Viewer application can be used for camera configuration, diagnostics, and testing. The program allows for, among other things:
previewing the RGB image and depth map
visualizing the 3D point cloud
adjusting camera parameters
recording camera data
playing back previously recorded data
exporting point cloud data
configuring advanced device settings.
The RealSense SDK 2.0 also enables the use of self-calibration functions for D400 series cameras. For the D415 model, the manufacturer indicates that calibration can be performed without specialized calibration targets.
Applications
The RealSense D415 can be used wherever it is necessary to acquire information about the depth and geometry of an observed scene, particularly in applications requiring relatively high measurement accuracy.
Typical applications include:
3D object scanning
spatial measurements
creation of 3D models and point clouds
3D object reconstruction
analysis of object dimensions and geometry
machine vision and computer vision systems
object recognition and localization
facial authentication and analysis systems
volumetric capture
robotics
industrial automation
prototyping of systems utilizing spatial vision
human-machine interaction systems
research and development projects requiring the capture of RGB and depth data.
