REINER SCT cyberJack® RFID komfort USB-C – secure contact and RFID card reader

Manufacturer: REINER Kartengeräte GmbH & Co. KG, Germany

The cyberJack® RFID komfort USB-C is an advanced dual-interface smart card reader that supports both contact cards and contactless RFID cards. It is designed for applications requiring secure user identification, PIN entry, electronic signatures, and online banking.

The device supports contactless cards compliant with ISO/IEC 14443 A/B and contact cards compliant with ISO/IEC 7816. It supports, among others, the German eID function, the PACE protocol, HBCI/FinTS banking, Secoder, chipTAN USB, EBICS, as well as FES and QES electronic signatures. It also supports eIDAS-compliant solutions.

A built-in 16-key keypad allows for secure PIN entry directly on the reader, without transmitting the code via the computer keyboard. A backlit LCD display shows information related to the current operation. When using the German eID function, the device can display details regarding requested permissions and the entity seeking access to the data before the data is released.

The USB-C model is a security class 3 reader developed based on the BSI TR-03119 specification and classified by the manufacturer as "Cat-S."

Required software
cyberJack® DriverPackage
The manufacturer recommends installing the latest cyberJack DriverPackage before connecting the reader to the computer for the first time. Drivers are available for:
- Windows,
- macOS,
- Linux,
- selected terminal server environments.

cyberJack® ControlCenter
In Windows environments, the cyberJack ControlCenter is included with the driver package; it allows you to, among other things:
- verify the reader's proper operation,
- perform device diagnostics,
- manage the reader,
- perform firmware updates.

Additional application-specific software
The driver itself enables communication between the computer and the reader; however, specific functions may require an appropriate application and a card provided by a third party. The manufacturer explicitly notes that additional software and/or smart cards may be required for specific use cases.

The reader supports, among others:
- AusweisApp2 – for using the German electronic ID card,
- Open eCard,
- eIDAS-compliant solutions,
- banking applications using HBCI/FinTS, EBICS, Secoder, or chipTAN USB,
- FES/QES electronic signature software.

Applications

The cyberJack® RFID komfort USB-C can be used for:
- handling contact smart cards,
- handling contactless RFID cards,
- secure PIN entry,
- electronic identification (eID),
- handling the German electronic ID card,
- authentication using the PACE protocol,
- HBCI/FinTS online banking,
- Secoder support,
- chipTAN USB,
- EBICS,
- advanced electronic signatures (FES),
- qualified electronic signatures (QES),
- eGovernment solutions,
- the ELSTER system,
- eIDAS-compliant solutions,
- handling compatible healthcare professional cards,
- using cryptographic cards and tokens,
- applications requiring hardware-based separation of the PIN entry process from the computer.

Advantages

Support for contact and contactless cards
A single device supports the two primary types of smart cards: ISO/IEC 7816 and RFID ISO/IEC 14443 A/B.

Secure PIN entry
The PIN is entered using the reader's own keypad. The manufacturer has implemented a mechanism that filters commands sent to the card during secure PIN mode, restricting communication to authorized commands only.

Integrated display
The backlit LCD allows transaction information to be displayed independently of the computer monitor. In eID applications, it can be used to verify the scope of access before confirming a transaction.

Security Class 3
The reader was developed in accordance with BSI TR-03119 requirements and features mechanisms designed for applications requiring an elevated level of security.

Protection against physical tampering
The device utilizes security seals compliant with BSI requirements. The manufacturer recommends checking their condition before using the device.

Card communication firewall
The reader includes a smart card communication filtering function, limiting the ability to transmit unauthorized commands during security-sensitive operations.

Wide range of applications
A single device can be used for eID, online banking, qualified electronic signatures, Secoder, chipTAN USB, EBICS, and e-government applications.

Updatable firmware
The manufacturer provides for secure firmware updates, ensuring the device's longevity and continued usability. Support for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Drivers are available for major desktop operating systems, as well as many server systems and terminal environments.

USB-C Connector
This new version replaces the earlier cyberJack® RFID komfort with a model adapted for modern computers and notebooks, while retaining the USB 2.0 interface and Dual Interface reader functionality.
