Environmental Awareness Campaign “Plant-Based Plastics”
A major shift is taking place in companies using single-use plastic items made from petroleum-based materials. Companies are adopting biodegradable, plant-based alternatives that meet stringent safety standards and environmental goals.
Plant-based alternatives include items made from PLA – polylactic acid.
Polylactic acid, a biopolymer derived from plant starch, meets regulatory requirements and is biocompatible. Choosing PLA reduces dependence on petroleum and significantly lowers carbon emissions, even in end-of-life scenarios that require incineration.
PLA, a thermoplastic polyester, is derived from any fermentable sugar and is typically produced from renewable, organic sources. Corn is the preferred raw material for PLA production due to its low cost and widespread availability, although sugarcane, tapioca root, cassava, wheat, and sugar beet pulp are also viable alternatives. Remarkably, PLA degradation products are non-toxic to humans and the environment. PLA also requires 25%-55% less energy to produce than traditional petroleum-based polymers.
With FDA approval for direct contact with biological fluids, PLA offers a promising alternative that meets industry safety standards while reducing the environmental impact of traditional single-use plastics.
An additional advantage of PLA over other bio-based materials is its true bio-based composition, which distinguishes it from mass balance-certified materials. In mass balance systems, only a certain percentage of the raw material comes from renewable sources, with the rest typically coming from fossil fuels.
